Dosage

A standard decoction can be administered orally or applied topically to affected areas. The traditional natural therapy for menstrual disorders and pain is generally 1–2 g daily of the powdered vine or root, or 1–2 ml of a 4:1 tincture daily in divided doses.

Abuta has been documented to have hypotensive activity in two animal studies; therefore, abuta is contraindicated for people with low blood pressure. An alkaloid in abuta, tetrandrine, has been documented to have various actions on heart function in animals and humans. Those with a heart condition or taking heart medications should consult with their doctor before using this plant Abuta should only be used under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner if pregnant.
